What the Waters Left Behind
Claire Rowan left Brynvara at eighteen and built a careful life far away in Adelaide, restoring damaged records for other people while keeping her own past sealed.
At forty-five, she returns for what should be a temporary archive-recovery contract after stormwater damages the Brynvara Memorial Hall records. Rowan Cottage gives her a practical place to stay — close enough to the town to do the work, far enough from Rowan House to breathe.
But the water has unsettled more than paper. Among old church files, welfare notes, and carefully buried correspondence, Claire begins to uncover evidence of warnings ignored, silence protected, and truth managed for the sake of reputation.
What began as preservation becomes witness. What began as temporary work becomes the first crack in a silence that has shaped Claire’s life for decades.
