The Calm Travel System: Your 48-Hour Checklist for Safe, Smooth Midlife Travel
Because “forgetting one thing” shouldn’t derail the trip you’ve waited years to take.
You know what I want for you, lovely lady?
Not frantic packing at midnight.
Not arriving sweaty and stressed.
Not that awful feeling of “I know I’ve forgotten something…”
I want you travelling with calm, capable, midlife confidence.
Here’s my Calm Travel System — a 48-hour checklist designed for midlife women who want safe, smooth travel without the drama.
Why a “system” beats a “to-do list”
A to-do list is random.
A system has order — and order creates calm.
This system works whether you’re:
travelling solo
travelling with friends
travelling with your husband/partner
travelling for the first time in years
Step 1: 48 hours before — set your foundations
1) Lock in official travel alerts (two minutes, big peace of mind)
Pick the one for your country:
AU: Smartraveller subscribe
NZ: SafeTravel register
UK: FCDO email updates
CA: Registration of Canadians Abroad
US: STEP enrolment
2) Print (yes, print) your “lifeline page”
One page. That’s it.
flight/accommodation details
address of where you’re staying
emergency contact
insurer details
any important medical info
Pop it in your handbag. Low-tech is underrated.
3) Do the “money split”
primary card + small cash in your day bag
backup card separate
emergency cash tucked away
This single habit saves holidays.
4) Confirm your arrival plan
Write it down:
how you’re getting from airport/station to your accommodation
what you’ll do if your phone dies
your accommodation’s check-in hours
Step 2: 24 hours before — pack smart, not heavy
The “carry-on confidence” rule
Your carry-on should let you survive 24 hours if luggage goes missing.
Carry-on essentials:
meds (more on this below)
phone charger + adaptor
one clean outfit + underwear
basic toiletries
glasses (if you wear them)
copies of key documents
Midlife-friendly packing (because comfort matters)
You don’t need twenty outfits. You need the right ones.
My midlife packing formula:
3 tops (mix & match)
2 bottoms
1 layer (cardi/jacket)
1 “nice” outfit
1 comfy set
2 shoes (walkers + dressier option)
Add climate-specific bits, and done.
The “menopause comfort kit” (optional but brilliant)
If this is you, don’t suffer in silence:
breathable layers
electrolyte sachets
a mini fan (or handheld fan)
magnesium (if you already use it)
a light scarf (doubles as warmth + modesty + airplane blanket)
Step 3: The night before — switch your brain off early
1) Charge everything
phone
earbuds
power bank
smartwatch (if you use it)
2) Put your “must-haves” in one place
Near the door:
passport
wallet
phone
keys
printed lifeline page
3) Do the “home safety sweep”
unplug what needs unplugging
lock windows/doors
lights on timers (if possible)
bins out
neighbour/family check-in arranged
Step 4: Travel day — stay calm and stay switched on
The airport / station mindset
You’re not rushing.
You’re moving with intention.
keep your valuables close
don’t get distracted in crowds
ignore the pressure to “help” strangers with your bag
(If you want to help, you can — but not at the cost of your safety.)
Arrive and anchor
When you arrive:
check in
drink water
eat something simple
take a short walk to learn the area
Then rest. You’re not 25. You don’t need to push.
Your quick “Calm Travel System” checklist (copy/paste style)
48 hours before
travel alerts subscribed/registered
arrival plan confirmed
lifeline page printed
money split done
24 hours before
carry-on essentials packed
outfits packed using the formula
comfort kit packed (if needed)
Night before
everything charged
must-haves by the door
home safety sweep done
Travel day
valuables close
hydrate + eat
arrive and anchor
Calm is a travel skill — and you can learn it
If you’ve spent decades caring for everyone else, it can feel strange to plan something just for you.
But love… this is your freedom season.
And freedom feels even better when it’s organised.
