Travel Insurance & Health Prep in Midlife: What to Cover Before You Board (Especially With Pre-Existing Conditions)
The grown-woman's guide to protecting your trip, your health, and your peace of mind.
Let me be lovingly blunt, my dear friend:
Travel insurance and health prep are not the “boring admin” part of travel.
They are the freedom protection plan.
Because midlife travel isn’t just about cute outfits and pretty photos — it’s about travelling wisely with the body you’ve got, the budget you’ve got, and the responsibilities you’re carrying.
Let’s talk about what actually matters.
First: know the difference between “trip cover” and “health cover”
Many people buy a policy thinking they’re covered… and then discover it’s mostly trip disruption (cancellation, delays, lost bags), not health and evacuation.
And here’s where it gets serious:
The CDC notes that medical evacuation insurance can be important for remote destinations or where high-quality care may not be available — and that evacuation can otherwise cost more than $100,000.
The U.S. State Department also flags evacuation by air ambulance can cost $20,000 to $200,000 depending on location and condition.
That’s not “just in case” money for most of us.
The Midlife Insurance Checklist (what to look for)
1) Medical cover that makes sense for your destination
Ask:
What’s the medical cover limit?
Does it include hospital, ambulance, prescriptions?
Are you covered for activities you’ll actually do (hiking, cycling, cruises, etc.)?
2) Medical evacuation and repatriation
If you’re heading anywhere remote — or anywhere with limited medical care — medical evacuation cover matters.
3) Pre-existing conditions (this is where midlife women often get caught)
If you have anything ongoing — blood pressure, asthma, thyroid, migraines, anxiety, arthritis, you name it — you need to understand how the policy treats it.
CHOICE explains the maze around pre-existing conditions and what may or may not be covered, including credit card insurance traps.
And insurers themselves often warn: if you don’t declare existing conditions, cover can be reduced or denied.
4) Cancellation and disruption (protect your bookings)
Midlife travel often costs more because we want comfort and safety (and honestly, we’ve earned it).
Check:
cancellation cover limits
what counts as a valid reason
excess amounts
coverage for delays/missed connections
Health prep in midlife: practical, not dramatic
Step 1: Book a quick pre-travel health check if needed
Not for fear. For wisdom.
Are your scripts up to date?
Do you need a letter for medications?
Do you need any travel vaccines for your destination? (Your GP or a travel clinic can advise.)
The WHO provides travel health and infectious disease information and links to additional resources.
Step 2: Build a “medication travel kit”
Pack:
meds in original packaging (where possible)
a list of medications (generic names are helpful)
a few extra days’ supply in case of delays
basic first-aid items you actually use
Step 3: Prepare for “midlife body realities”
Let’s not pretend, okay?
Bodies are beautiful… and they can be unpredictable.
A few comfort strategies:
choose aisle seats if you prefer easier bathroom access
plan rest days (not every day needs to be a “big day”)
hydrate like it’s your job
pack layers (planes + menopause = a whole thing)
Step 4: Know your “help plan”
Wherever you live, sign up for official travel advisories and emergency updates:
AU: Smartraveller
NZ: SafeTravel
UK: FCDO travel advice updates
CA: Registration of Canadians Abroad
US: STEP
This isn’t about expecting trouble. It’s about being reachable and informed.
The “grown woman's” way to choose a policy (quick steps)
List your must-covers (medical, cancellation, cruises, activities)
Declare medical conditions honestly
Read exclusions like a detective (yes, it’s annoying)
Check evacuation/repatriation
Confirm excess + claim process
Save insurer contacts offline
Protect the trip so you can enjoy the trip
You deserve travel that feels like freedom — not financial stress.
So do the boring bits well:
choose cover that matches your reality
prep your health wisely
stay connected to official alerts
And then? Go. Enjoy. Breathe. Live.
