30 Journaling Prompts to Help You Hear God’s Calling in Midlife

30 Journaling Prompts to Help You Hear God’s Calling in Midlife

December 12, 20256 min read

Questions to untangle your thoughts, notice God’s leading and step into your next season with purpose.

Hello my dear friend,

There’s something powerful about putting pen to paper.

Thoughts that feel tangled in your head start to make sense.
Fears look smaller when you see them in ink.
And often, in the quiet of journaling, you begin to notice the gentle nudge of God.

If you’re a woman in your 40s, 50s or 60s and you’re wondering:

  • “What is God calling me to in this season?”

  • “Have I missed my purpose?”

  • “How do I untangle my desires from His leading?”

…these journaling prompts are for you.

Christian women around the world use journaling as a tool for spiritual growth and discernment, especially when they feel stuck or unsure.

Let’s create a little sacred space on the page, shall we?

How to Use These Prompts

Before you dive in, a few tips:

  • Don’t rush. Choose one prompt at a time and sit with it.

  • Invite God in. Start with a simple prayer: “Lord, meet me here as I write.”

  • Be brutally honest. God can work with what’s real, not what sounds “spiritual”.

  • Come back again. Revisit the same prompts every few months to see how your answers shift.

You don’t need a fancy journal. A $2 notebook and a pen you like is enough.

Part 1: Remembering Your Story (6 Prompts)

Your calling is often hidden in your story. Let’s go treasure-hunting there first.

  1. Looking back over the last 10–20 years, which three seasons felt most alive and meaningful to you? What were you doing, and who were you serving?

  2. Write about a time you walked through something really hard with God. What did He grow in you through that season?

  3. List three “unexpected turns” in your life (moves, career changes, relationship shifts). How has God used each one in ways you didn’t see at first?

  4. Who are the people you have naturally walked alongside over the years? (Younger women, mums, carers, colleagues, grandkids, etc.) What patterns do you notice?

  5. If your life so far was a book, what might the chapter titles be? Which “chapter” is still echoing loudly in your heart?

  6. Write about a moment when you thought, “I was made for this.” What was happening around you? How did you feel in your body?

Part 2: Listening for God’s Voice (6 Prompts)

God doesn’t shout over the noise; He often speaks in gentle, repeated whispers.

  1. Which Bible verses or stories keep resurfacing in this season? What do they have in common?

  2. When was the last time you sensed God nudging you to do something small but specific? What happened when you obeyed (or didn’t)?

  3. If you could ask Jesus one honest question about your purpose right now, what would it be? Write the question, then write what you imagine He might lovingly reply.

  4. Describe a time you felt unusually close to God. Where were you? What were you doing? What does that tell you about how you best connect with Him?

  5. Write out a short, honest prayer about your calling. Don’t tidy it up; let it be as messy as it really feels.

  6. Imagine sitting at a café table with Jesus. What would you vent about? What would you thank Him for? What would He gently challenge you on?

Part 3: Clarifying Your Gifts and Desires (6 Prompts)

Your God-given calling will usually line up with your gifts and the desires He’s planted in you.

  1. What do people most often ask you for help with? (Practical tasks, emotional support, prayer, ideas, hospitality, organisation, creativity?) What does this say about your strengths?

  2. Think of three compliments you’ve received that were hard to accept. Write about why they were uncomfortable and what might be true in them.

  3. What activities make you lose track of time in a good way? What do those moments have in common?

  4. If you weren’t worried about money or what people thought, how would you spend your days for the next year? Be honest and specific.

  5. Write about the kind of woman you love being. When do you like yourself the most? What are you doing? Who benefits?

  6. Make a list called “Things That Light Me Up”. Aim for at least 20 items – big and small. Circle the ones that feel connected to serving others, not just personal comfort.

Part 4: Facing Your Fears and Barriers (6 Prompts)

Where there’s calling, there’s usually resistance. Let’s name it.

  1. What scares you most about stepping into your calling in midlife? Write every fear you can think of, no matter how silly it sounds.

  2. Which voices play in your head when you think about trying something new? (e.g. “You’re too old”, “You’ll fail”, “Who do you think you are?”) Whose voice do they sound like?

  3. Write a conversation between your fearful self and your faith-filled self. Let them both speak. What does each one say?

  4. What are you afraid of losing if you obey God fully in this season? (Comfort, reputation, control, approval?) Be honest.

  5. Looking back, when have you taken a risk with God and not regretted it? What happened, and what did you learn about Him and yourself?

  6. Finish this sentence ten times: “If I really trusted God with my future, I would…” See what comes out.

Part 5: Designing the Next Gentle Steps (6 Prompts)

Now we get practical. Calling grows through small, repeated steps.

  1. If you had just two hours a week to invest in your calling, how would you use them? Map those two hours in detail.

  2. List everything on your plate right now. Circle the items that clearly fit your sense of calling, and put a question mark beside the ones you’re not sure about.

  3. What is one small thing you could stop doing (or do less of) to free space for what matters most in this season?

  4. Describe what a “faithful day” would look like for you right now. Not a perfect day – a faithful one. What would be included? What might be left out?

  5. Write a letter to yourself five years from now. What do you hope is true about your relationship with God, your impact and your inner life?

  6. Ask God for one next step. Write the question at the top of the page: “Lord, what is my next step with You?” Then write everything that comes to mind for five minutes without censoring, and look for the gentle, recurring themes.

Turning Your Journal into a “Calling Companion”

You don’t need to treat this like homework.

Think of your journal as your Calling Companion – a place to:

  • vent honestly,

  • celebrate small wins,

  • record tiny clues, and

  • track the way God is slowly, kindly steering you.

Here are a few ways to keep the conversation going:

  • Revisit your answers every 3–6 months and notice what’s changing.

  • Use one prompt per week in your quiet time.

  • Invite a trusted friend or mentor to work through a few prompts with you.

  • Add Bible verses about purpose and calling alongside your journal entries to anchor what you’re hearing.

You don’t have to have your whole future mapped out to be obedient. You just need a pen, a little quiet, and a willing heart.

Midlife is not your “leftover” season. It can be the chapter where your calling becomes clearer than it’s ever been.

Until we chat again...

Blessings and hugs to you,

Dianne xx

WYRLORA - Dianne M. White - Blog Post Author

Here's a bit about Di, the Author of this Post...

Dianne M. White (Di), is a published book author, Midlife Mentor, and the woman behind WYRLORA – a cosy, faith–family–freedom–infused corner of the internet created especially for women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

After decades of juggling family, businesses, and her own “surely life was meant to feel better than this” moments, she set out to build a space where midlife women could feel seen, supported, and genuinely inspired.

Around here, she talks honestly about passion, purpose, menopause, confidence, calling, and all the beautifully messy bits of midlife – without the fluff, fakery, or 20-something influencers telling you how to live your life.

If this post has spoken to you even a little, Di would love to keep walking this journey with you.

You’re warmly invited to join The WYRLORA Circle, her completely FREE, private online community for like-minded midlife women (with none of the usual “Meta” nonsense or creepy tracking).

You can also subscribe to The WL Message, her FREE monthly eZine packed with real talk, practical tips, encouragement, and a little bit of sass. Think of it as a friendly nudge in your inbox and a quiet chorus of women in your corner, cheering you on as you create the next (and best) season of your life.
