How to Start Walking in Your Calling: 5 Gentle Steps for Women in Midlife
Because your purpose grows as you move, not when everything is perfectly mapped out.
Bonjour lovely Lady,
Maybe you’ve done the books, the quizzes, the journaling.
You have a sense of what God might be calling you to… but you’re still stuck at the starting line.
You think:
What if I fail?
What if I look silly?
What if I heard wrong?
What if this is all in my head?
So you wait for more clarity. More confidence. More confirmation.
And days quietly turn into months (and sometimes years).
Here’s the truth we often forget:
You don’t walk in your calling because everything is clear.
Things become clearer as you walk.
Let’s look at five gentle, realistic steps to actually start walking in your calling in midlife – right where you are.
Step 1: Start Where Your Feet Already Are
We often imagine calling as something “out there”:
the new job,
the big ministry,
the move,
the “one day” project.
But God usually starts with what’s already in front of you.
Ask yourself:
Who has God already placed in my life?
What responsibilities do I already carry?
Where do I already have a voice or influence?
Your calling might begin with:
the way you encourage women at work,
how you grandparent with intention,
the way you host people around your table,
the faithful care you give to a parent, spouse or friend.
Before you launch anything “big”, ask: How can I be intentionally faithful right here, this month?
Step 2: Create a Sacred “Calling Hour” Each Week
We make time for what matters.
Instead of waiting for a free weekend (that never comes), schedule a weekly Calling Hour – a simple, protected block of time where you:
pray about your calling,
plan tiny steps,
do one small action.
This could look like:
Sunday afternoon with your journal and Bible,
a midweek morning at a café,
an evening with your laptop once the house is quiet.
In that hour you might:
write one page,
send one message,
research one option,
plan one conversation,
prepare for one small act of service.
Think of it as a standing date with God about your next season.
Step 3: Learn the Holy “No”
Midlife calling isn’t just about what you start.
It’s also about what you stop.
Most of us are already overloaded. To walk in your calling, you’ll likely need to free some capacity.
Ask honestly:
What am I doing out of guilt, habit or people-pleasing?
What no longer fits this season?
What could be released or reduced?
Then practice the holy “no”:
“Thank you for thinking of me.
I’ve prayed about this and it’s a no for this season,
so I can stay faithful to what God’s already given me.”
Every time you say no to what’s not yours, you make space to say yes to what is.
Step 4: Build a Supportive Circle
Calling is too heavy to carry alone.
You’ll need at least a small circle who:
believe in you,
tell you the truth,
pray for you,
cheer you on when you wobble.
This might include:
one or two close friends,
your spouse or a family member,
a pastor, mentor or coach,
another woman in midlife pursuing her calling.
Share specifically:
what you sense God nudging you towards,
what you’re afraid of,
the tiny steps you’re taking.
Invite them to check in and ask, “How are you going with that thing God put on your heart?”
Step 5: Anchor Your Calling in Scripture and Small Daily Habits
Big vision is beautiful. But it’s your habits that keep you walking when emotions dip.
Pick 1–3 Scriptures that speak to your calling. For example:
Ephesians 2:10 – created for good works
Proverbs 3:5–6 – God directing your paths
2 Timothy 1:7 – spirit of power, love and self-discipline
Write them out and place them:
on your bathroom mirror,
on your phone lock screen,
in the front of your journal.
Then choose small daily or weekly habits that line up with your calling:
10 minutes praying for the people you feel called to serve,
15 minutes each day learning or practising your craft,
one encouraging message per week to someone in your “people group”,
showing up consistently to that small group, team or ministry.
These tiny, repeated actions shape you into the woman who can carry what God is entrusting to you.
What Walking in Your Calling Actually Feels Like
Let’s set some realistic expectations.
Walking in your calling will not always feel:
glamorous,
confident,
easy,
Instagram-worthy.
Sometimes it will feel:
ordinary and hidden,
stretching and vulnerable,
slow and uncertain.
But over time, you’ll notice:
a deeper sense of rightness in your soul,
more alignment between what you care about and how you spend your time,
glimpses of fruit in other people’s lives,
less obsession over what others think,
more desire to be faithful than to be impressive.
That’s what calling often feels like:
not fireworks, but a steady, growing yes.
You Don’t Have to Sprint – Just Take the Next Step
If you feel overwhelmed reading this, take a breath. This isn’t a race.
You don’t have to:
have a five-year plan,
know all the outcomes, or
fix every fear before you begin.
You just need to ask:
“God, what is my next step of obedience?”
Then, with shaking knees if you have to, take it.
Send the email.
Book the coffee.
Start the study.
Write the first page.
Turn up for the one person He put in front of you.
Your calling won’t arrive on your doorstep fully formed. It will grow with you as you walk.
And midlife? It’s a beautiful time to begin.
Until we chat again...
Blessings and hugs to you,
